When I realised I wanted to become a graphics designer, I went online and watched/downloaded tutorial videos on graphics design. I got as many as I could and watched. I watched and watched until I was filled with so much fear that I didn’t want to watch anymore.
The videos showed people that were so good at what they do that I began wondering if I would ever become that good, if I would ever be able to design something as basic as a circle. The fear was gripping, I panicked and I decided not to watch the tutorials anymore. I sort of abandoned the idea of becoming a graphics designer because to me “it was just too hard and scary”.
Fast forward to about a year later, a friend of mine, who knew about my desire to become a graphics designer, called me to tell me there was someone that needed a design to promote their business. I panicked and turned it down and said “I don’t know how to design oh” and he goes; “Don’t worry, I know you can do it, I’m sending her your number”.
I was forced to communicate with the lady and I ended up designing what she needed with my limited (or so I thought) knowledge. That was sometime in 2015, the beginning of my design journey. Today I have grown and improved so much that I laugh at the memory of my fear to begin in the first place.
Everything you dream of becoming is on the other side of fear, and you owe it to yourself to make an attempt at fulfilling that dream. Even if that particular dream never actualizes, you will discover new dreams along the way that you will make the most of, just because you gave it a shot and tried.
Everything you dream of becoming is on the other side of fear. You owe it to yourself to make an attempt at fulfilling that dream.
Everything we are capable of doing is on the other side of fear, and if we don’t try to push and work through the fear, we will never discover the amazing things we are capable of. Now i’m not saying you must overcome the fear first, what i’m saying is that you should try despite the fear.
Maybe the push I needed was that phone call and my friends refusal to take “I can’t do it” for an answer. Consider this post YOUR push.
What is that thing you have not done/started because of fear? You should totally make a conscious step to begin today. Trust me you won’t regret it. Besides, what exactly do you have to lose?
